Troides Magellanus(Magellan Birdwing) -Male
Troides Magellanus(Magellan Birdwing) -Male -Marinduque Isl, Philippines -(4.5 in wingspan).
This butterfly was named after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan who was killed in the Philippines in 1521.
This is very similar to Troides Prattorum(which is endemic to Buru Island and much rarer) except that the markings are NOT nearly as bold. That is, the white markings on the forewings of Troides Prattorum are more pronounced and the hindwings of Troides Prattorum have a deep iridescent gold instead of the golden yellow on Troides Magellanus.
Furthermore, if you view the hindwings of Troides Magellanus from an angle they will turn opalescent just like in Troides Prattorum, but to a much lesser degree.
